TMEA Area D Choir Audition (All Sections)

Due to impending inclement weather on Friday evening, we will not be travelling to Waco on Friday evening. Students should follow instructions below:

  • Departure Saturday morning will be from the Band black top at Round Rock High School. 
  • Please arrive no later than 6:15 so that we are rolling no later than 7:00 am. 
  • Cars may be parked on the band blacktop on in Central Admin’s main parking lot. 
  • If you have trouble finding the black top please look for the RRHS band semi trailer.

At this time, no change to the audition start time has been communicated. 

Students have all signed up for a Remind group for information specific to the event.

Lodging –  Holiday Inn & Express

Friday, 1/10
9:00 – Bring your suitcase and leave it in the Choir Library
1:45 – Leave class and come to the choir room to load bus. We will do a double check of items you need for the event, including your music.
2:00 – Load at Westwood Choir, then depart for other RRISD campuses, travel to Waco
5:30pm – Reservations at BJ’s Brewhouse for dinner
(use your per diem – Students will be given a per diem by Round Rock ISD. RRISD allots $7 per meal, for a total of $28 for the duration of the trip.)
10pm – Lights out
Saturday, 1/11
6:15 am – Wake up – you need to be using your speaking voice at this point… don’t sing
6:30 am – PJ Breakfast downstairs
8 am – Registration at Midway HS
9 am – Auditions begin
Noon – Lunch (Midway HS will have concession options for purchase)
1 pm – Sight-reading audition begins
2 pm – Auditions complete, tabulations begin
What time is the audition over? Students will depart Waco Midway HS around 5:30 pm under NORMAL conditions.

  • Area D consists of TMEA Regions 8, 20, 21, 26
  • Placement in All State Choirs is defined by TMEA Apportionment Policy. 20 students, 5 from each region, compete for the following placement to the respective All-State Choirs:
    • Chairs 1 – 3 on each voice part advance to the All-State Mixed Choir
    • Chairs 4 – 8 in soprano and alto sections advance to the All-State Treble Choir
    • Chairs 4 – 6 in tenor and bass sections advance to the All-State Tenor-Bass Choir

The Process

  • Students are assigned a badge number (see registration below)
  • Students sing in order in their room, 1, 2, 3… until the last person in that room has sung.
  • Students who do not have a ride can ride the bus home.
  • What is different about this audition?At this round, students audition on the prepared literature as well as sight-reading.
    • Since this round involves sight-reading, students are not permitted to leave the audition (or retrieve phones) until the completion of the audition for all voice parts. This is designed to ensure maximum test security with regard to the sight-reading prompt.
    • Results are announced at this round – those who will sing in the Texas All-State Choir.

What Should Students Bring and NOT Bring

  • Original copies of the audition literature (no photo copies allowed) and a pencil.
  • Money for snacks and drinks.
  • Students MAY NOT bring any other electronic device into the audition venue.
  • If students bring a cell phone, they MUST give it to a chaperone to hold until they leave the contest site.
  • If students must use a cell phone after they audition they may do so ONLY in the presence of an adult and ONLY to call for a ride home.
  • Students MAY be disqualified if they are caught using it NOT in the presence of an adult.


  • Upon arrival, All sections will register at their respective tables.
  • Students will sign in, receive a badge which they MUST wear at all times, and a copy of the cuts.
  • Immediately after registering, they should proceed to the cafeteria where they are to remain until further instructed.
  • No PM singers are permitted at this round.

What Happens After Registration

  • Round One – Singing
    • Once students register they MAY NOT practice the cuts.
    • They may study the cuts but not SING the cuts.
    • A director will warm the students up.
    • The cuts will be run twice with everyone after warm-up.
    • Our goal is to have kids auditioning 15 minutes after registration closes.
  • Round Two – Sight-Reading
    • Following the procedure utilized at the Area audition, students are taken to a holding room in complete sections.
    • Students are read the instructions about the sight-reading prompt, and are given a group practice of the procedure.
    • Using the Round 2 badge number, each student sings the sight-reading in the judging room in order.
    • When completed with the reading, students are directed back to the large holding room.
    • Once all students have completed sight-reading, the Vocal Chair instructs students that they can use their phones again.
    • Once all score tabulation has completed, and following the director results review period, results are announced.
  • Announcement of Results
    • Students who are selected for a TMEA All-State Choir will register immediately following announcement of results.
    • A $20 fee (CASH) will be required for students who are selected, which covers the music packet and other ancillary costs associated with the ensemble
